Do you know what percentage of violent attacks end up on the ground?
The self-defense, martial arts, and firearms training world is notorious for cherry-picking and distorting data to fit certain narratives, often creating confusion on life-or-death topics.
One pervasive myth is that “90% of fights end up on the ground,” which is simply untrue. This statistic was cherry-picked from a study focused on violent law enforcement interactions, which makes sense given the context.
However, when it comes to violent crimes against everyday people, the data tells a different story.
The IDS meta-analysis, which reviewed multiple data sets and case reports, suggests that about 30% of violent attacks end up on the ground. This means that approximately 70% of attacks do not.
Of the 30% that do go to the ground, 60% of the time, the victim fell down, while in 40% of cases, the victim was deliberately taken down by their attacker.
Considering that a significant percentage of both simple and aggravated assaults occur at close contact distance, and nearly one-third of them end up on the ground, it makes sense to invest time in consistently training for these types of critical incidents.
Furthermore, if you are a grappler who carries a concealed weapon, it’s important to recognize that the skill gaps between grappling for sport and grappling while carrying are significant.
Don’t assume you’ll automatically know what to do in a real-life situation. This assumption could be deadly.
