Principles. Preparation. Responsibility.
A Letter From John Hallett
If you’re reading this, thank you.
Whether you’re a brand-new student, a parent looking for answers, an instructor, or someone simply trying to become a little harder to hurt, I’m glad you’re here.
People often ask me why I built ClearSky.
The easy answer is that I love teaching.
The real answer goes much deeper.
Over the years, I’ve trained with incredible instructors, earned belts, attended seminars, taught thousands of classes, and spent countless hours trying to understand what actually works when life gets difficult.
Along the way, I noticed something.
There was no shortage of techniques.
Every style had techniques.
Every instructor had a version of the “right way.”
But something was missing.
Very few people were teaching students how to think.
They were teaching what to do.
Not why it worked.
Not when it might fail.
Not how to adapt when the situation changed.
And the situation always changes.
That is why ClearSky exists.
This Was Never About Winning Fights
People assume I teach people how to fight.
That is only part of the story.
My real goal has always been to help people become harder to victimize.
Sometimes that means avoiding a dangerous situation.
Sometimes it means recognizing trouble before it starts.
Sometimes it means saying the right thing.
Sometimes it means walking away.
And yes, sometimes it means fighting.
But fighting has never been the goal.
Going home has always been the goal.
Life Does Not Follow Scripts
Life does not care how many techniques you have memorized.
People do not attack exactly like they did during last week’s drill.
Emergencies do not happen on soft mats.
Stress does not ask if you are ready.
That is why you will hear me say:
The Situation Sets the Strategy.
It is not just a slogan.
It is how we train.
Stay aware.
Pay attention.
Adapt.
Solve the problem that is actually in front of you—not the one you wish you had.
I Do Not Want Technique Collectors
If all you leave ClearSky with is a collection of techniques, I have failed you.
I want you to leave with something more valuable.
I want you to become someone who can think under pressure.
Someone who can stay calm while others panic.
Someone who can make good decisions when emotions are high.
Someone who can adapt when the plan falls apart.
Those skills do not only help in self-defense.
They help in business.
Marriage.
Parenting.
Leadership.
Life.
Principles Over Techniques
Techniques matter.
Principles matter more.
A person who memorizes one hundred techniques may still freeze when the situation changes.
A person who understands distance, timing, angles, leverage, pressure, and decision-making can adapt to problems they have never seen before.
That is why ClearSky teaches people to understand—not just imitate.
Be Curious
I do not have all the answers.
I never will.
If I discover a better way to teach something, I will change.
If science gives us a better understanding, we will adapt.
If another instructor has a better idea, I will learn from them.
Ego has no place in learning.
Being right is not the goal.
Getting better is.
Pressure Reveals Truth
We pressure test because pressure tells the truth.
Pressure exposes weaknesses.
At first, that can be frustrating.
Eventually, you realize it is a gift.
Weaknesses you can see are weaknesses you can improve.
Failure is not the enemy.
Pretending you are better than you are is.
The Peaceful Warrior
ClearSky is not about glorifying violence.
It is about preparing responsible people to deal with violence when no better option remains.
The strongest person is not the one looking for a fight.
The strongest person is the one capable of avoiding unnecessary violence while remaining fully prepared to act when the line is crossed.
We train to stay calm in chaos.
We train to end the fight before it starts.
But when there is no other option, we act with purpose, precision, and power.
My Promise to You
If you choose to train with us, I promise a few things.
I will not teach you something simply because it is traditional.
I will not ask you to believe something just because I said it.
I will challenge you.
I will encourage you.
I will probably make you uncomfortable from time to time.
But I will always respect you.
You are trusting us with something incredibly important:
Your safety and the safety of the people you love.
I do not take that responsibility lightly.
More Than Self-Defense
As I have gotten older, I have realized ClearSky is not really about fighting.
It is about becoming the kind of person who is prepared when life gets hard.
Prepared physically.
Prepared mentally.
Prepared emotionally.
Prepared morally.
Prepared to protect.
Prepared to lead.
Prepared to serve.
I do not want you to become the toughest person in the room.
I want you to become the most capable.
The most responsible.
The person others can count on when things go wrong.
Train More. Suck Less.
People laugh when they first hear our motto:
Train More. Suck Less.
It gets a smile, but it is also serious.
Nobody starts out great.
We all struggle.
We all fail.
We all have bad days.
The answer is not perfection.
The answer is showing up again tomorrow.
One more class.
One more repetition.
One better decision.
That is how real confidence is built.
Not by pretending.
By earning it.
Thank You
Whether you train with me for a month, a year, or a lifetime, I hope you leave better than when you arrived.
Not just because of what you learned.
Because of who you became.
If ClearSky helps you become a better protector, parent, leader, teammate, or human being, then everything we have built has been worth it.
Thank you for trusting us.
I’ll see you on the mats.
