Why I Don’t Believe in Feel-Good Seminars
I’ve been teaching self-defense and fitness for decades, and there’s something I need to say: I don’t believe in “feel-good” seminars or one-off group classes.
Why? Because we don’t want people to feel like they checked a box. We want people to actually be safe.
The Problem With Quick Fixes
A two-hour seminar, or even a one-day crash course, can be fun. You sweat, you hit pads, you hear some good stories. You leave feeling motivated. But that feeling fades fast—and so do the skills.
The truth is, your brain and body don’t learn under pressure from a single exposure.
- Within 24 hours, you’ve already forgotten half of what you learned.
- Within a week, 90% of it is gone if you don’t reinforce it.
- Under real stress, most of it will vanish completely.
That’s not training. That’s entertainment.

Training for Reality
At RMSDF & ClearSky Training, our system is designed to give you real, usable skills that hold up when it matters:
- Repetition with Resistance → You have to train a technique enough that it becomes second nature, even against a resisting opponent.
- Progressive Stress → We start slow, then gradually add speed, power, and chaos. That’s how you build composure under pressure.
- Failure as Growth → We design training so students fail 15–30% of the time. Not too easy, not too hard. Just the right amount of struggle to trigger real learning.
- Mindset & Legal Prep → It’s not just about fighting. It’s about awareness, decision-making, and understanding the law so you can survive the fight and the aftermath.
What I’d Do Instead of a One-Off Seminar
If someone can’t join regular classes but still wants more than just a quick hit of confidence, here’s what I’d recommend:
- Series-Based Seminars
- Not a one-and-done, but a progressive series spread out over time.
- Each session refreshes forgotten skills while adding new layers of resistance and realism.
- This way, students don’t just check a box—they actually build retention and competence.
- Online Portal + Weekly Review
- Use the ClearSky Training portal to keep skills sharp at home.
- Students can film themselves doing drills and submit videos for instructor feedback.
- This keeps accountability high and ensures progress doesn’t stall between live sessions.
- Hybrid Approach
- Best of both worlds: a seminar series plus weekly portal work.
- Live training provides pressure-testing. Online reinforcement keeps it alive in the nervous system.
- Together, this builds consistency and confidence in a way that one-off seminars never can.
Why This Matters
When you buy into “feel-good” seminars, you walk away with confidence but no competence. That false confidence can get people hurt.
I want my students to leave here not just feeling tougher—but actually being tougher. Not just thinking they could defend themselves—but knowing they could because they’ve tested themselves under pressure and revisited the skills until they stuck.
Final Word
Seminars sell the illusion of progress. Our training builds the reality of competence.
At RMSDF & ClearSky, we’ll never water it down just to make you feel good for a weekend. We want you prepared—for life.
>>>Because your safety—and the safety of your family—is worth more than a certificate and a photo.
